THIS RESTAURANT CLOSED FEBRUARY 2012

Midtown's Tierra has made quite a splash ever since its 1999 opening thanks to excellent Latin-fusion cuisine, solid service and inviting surroundings. The husband-wife/chef-proprietor team of Dan and Ticha Krinsky changes the menu at least seasonally and as often as weekly depending upon available produce. Caribbean and Central/South American influences reflect Tisha's youth spent in Brazil, Peru, Chile, Panama and Nicaragua. Suggested starters include black bean soup, mussels and Salvadoran cheese pupusa. Winning entrées can include trout relleno, free-range beef tenderloin and grilled pork medallions. Try to order at least a couple of the outstanding sides from the à la carte menu, including chipotle mashed potatoes, sauteed kale and tropical fruit relish. Desserts include at least one variety of flan, crepes, ice cream and the ever-popular tres leches cake. A few imported beers and a short but well-chosen, Latin-dominated wine list are available. Reservations suggested. Serving dinner Tue–Sat. Closed Sun–Mon.
