One of Baltimore's oldest institutions for fine dining, the Spanish eatery Tio Pepe drips with Old World elegance. Whitewashed brick walls, crisp tablecloths and candlelight make it an ideal setting for intimate dinners, and the decadent cuisine suits a special occasion worthy of a splurge. For the full experience, sample the shrimp in garlic sauce appetizer, which has been a favorite since Tio Pepe opened in 1968. A popular starter, mushrooms on toast, has its own legion of devoted fans. Other specialties include filet of sole with bananas, slow-cooked paella for two, and suckling pig. Preparation can take some time, so relax and enjoy the setting over one of the well-priced wines available, or the house sangria in red, white or sparkling variations. The pine nut roll is an oft-recommended dessert, but there are plenty of other options, including baked Alaska and caramel flan.

"Tío’s expertly prepared selection of fish is extensive, including mahi-mahi, sea bass, rockfish, and tilapia. Zarzuela, the Catalonian seafood stew, and the iconic paella are understandable favorites."
