Best Caribbean/Tropical

Judged only by its exterior, Curly’s Grill looks like any other building in any other city. But take a look at the menu, and it’s apparent that the focus here is on food and not décor. Inspired by frequent trips to the Caribbean islands, owners/chefs and husband-and-wife Kirk and Krista Van Wagner turned this historic restaurant — it’s been in the family for three generations — into a Caribbean-influenced eatery. Starters include black bean soup, steamed clams, Jamaican jerk chicken wings, calamari and conch fritters. Or try the grilled jerk chicken and artichoke salad. Much recommended is the Jamaican Escovitche Fish (a filet of whitefish sautéed with peppers and onions and a slightly spicy tomato sauce). Also try the half jerk chicken or the steak au poivre. Gluten-free cooking available upon request.

Full bar. Serving lunch Mon–Fri, dinner nightly.

"The food is always good here — and at times remarkable. Just be sure to request one of the front rooms."
