Kalamatas

Average Cost: $

Phone: 615-221-4002

Categories: Mediterranean , Middle Eastern , Greek

Features:

It's all about the food at Kalamatas, blessedly. The nothing-fancy dining experience, while tucked amid retail establishments in a Green Hills strip mall (and with a new, spacious location in Brentwood and another near Belmont university), belies the exquisitely prepared Mediterranean dishes. Everything is super-fresh and mighty good, from the substantial Greek salads, hummus, falafel, tabouli and stuffed grape leaves to the juicy gyro sandwiches and the tender kabobs. One lunchtime sampling of a roasted lamb loin special found it indeed as tender as a beef fillet, as predicted by Lebanese-born proprietor Maher Fawaz, who co-owns the restaurant with former Saint Thomas Hospital executive chef Beth Collins. The tiramisu, baklava and other dessert specials are highlights as well. Takeout is a popular way to go, particularly during what can be chaotic lunchtime service. No alcohol available. BYOB. Serving lunch and dinner Mon-Sat. Closed Sun.
