From humble beginnings in a tiny South End shop to its current sleek
and spacious location in the tony Plaza-Midwood neighborhood, Nova’s
Bakery brings a taste of the American dream — and Eastern European baked
goods — to Charlotte. After opening their small patisserie in 1996,
Serbian immigrants Vlado and Sladjana Novakovic quickly won over local
lovers of freshly baked bread by advertising their treats at the
Regional Farmers’ Market. Customers couldn’t get enough of their
delicious cranberry pecan bread, fresh scones and crusty croissants,
compelling the Novakovics to supply their goods to large retailers in
the area such as Harris Teeter, which prompted the opening of a larger
shop. Now, loyal patrons line up for a taste of European-style pastries
(think cannolis, baklava, éclairs and tiramisu), pack the coffee shop,
and fill their arms with loaves of fresh bread to take home. Get there
early before the last slice of local-favorite orange chocolate bread is
gone.
Serving 7 am–1 pm Saturday year round.
