Best Deli

Boasting Cleveland's best corned beef sandwich, Slyman's Restaurant packs in the crowds. The line of people waiting for tables usually extends out the door, so the impatient need not apply. Once inside, an open kitchen and friendly lunch counter add to the energetic atmosphere. Doors open early to cater to a bustling, pre-work breakfast crowd. The early morning choices feature a variety of options containing the famed corned beef, as well as traditional standbys such as hotcakes and omelets.  Breakfast stops being served at 11 am, but not to worry: The lunch choices that follow are nothing short of impressive. Dominating the menu is the touted corned beef sandwich, which towers at a formidable three inches high and weighs in at 12 ounces. The fresh corned beef topples out of the sandwich, so unless you are a particularly hearty eater, expect leftovers. Different types of Reuben sandwiches and a variety of other deli delights round out the sandwich menu. The corned beef, pastrami, ham and turkey are also available to-go by the pound. If your stomach is really rumbling for lunch, take advantage of the hearty diner choices. Choose from hot turkey breast or beef brisket, served closed-faced and smothered with gravy (or barbecue if you please) with a side of fries or home fries, and a pickle. For lesser appetites, the tuna salad plate is delicious. The traditional diner crew might be interested in the burgers and hot dogs, and be sure to try a slice of fluffy cheesecake for dessert.

No alcohol available. Serving breakfast and lunch Mon–Fri. Closed Sat–Sun.

"The corned beef is why you go: a softball-sized lump of lean the color of a Great Lakes sunset, kissed with fat and slow-cooked to succulence, then nestled between clouds of fresh bread."

Esquire magazine, "The Best Sandwiches in America", February 2008
