Owner Michael Purdum has been battering fish, pickles and just about anything else he can get his hands on since early childhood. Thus, it was a natural step for him to open an English-style pub using his family's recipes that have been passed down for generations. With a name inspired by the deserted hardware store it annexed upon opening in 1996, The Old Bag of Nails retains the character of a British neighborhood tavern while still appealing to American taste buds. The menu abandons British pub staples for classic, domestic Americanized bar food such as chicken wings and loaded potato skins. Lesser-known starters, such as black bean dip, potato cakes and the house-special beer-battered pickles, prove the real ringers here. And the one true homage to British cuisine, the fish and chips, could easily rival that of any pub in Britain.Kids' menu. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. "Besides the food, patrons come for the good Scotch whiskey and the wide selection of imported beers and ales. If you've got room for dessert after all that eating and drinking, the deep-fried Snickers bar is a must."
