If you’ve had your fill of black beans and rice and are looking to step outside the typical Texas dining box, Ziziki’s brings the hard-to-find flavor of the Mediterranean to three locations in the Dallas area. Greek-Italian descendant Costa Arabatzis and wife Mary Cloutier-Arabatzis strove to fill the regional epicurean void when they opened their quaint ethnic bistro in 1994 in the trendy Travis Walk shopping district. Upscale-casual defines the black and white-tiled floors, cherry woods, and white walls and tablecloths. While Sunday brunch remains informal, Friday and Saturday nights continue to attract a trendy, social crowd. At the Travis Walk location, the garden courtyard is the perfect spot for sipping a glass from the Wine Spectator award-winning wine list and munching on house-made pita bread triangles, served with the signature cucumber dill sauce that gives the restaurant its name. The fare is Mediterranean in scope but relies mainly on Greek and Italian influences. Lamb’s the word. Whether skewered, sliced or stuffed in pastitsio (Greek lasagna), Ziziki’s isn’t sheepish about using lamb in every way possible. The local taverna also offers traditional lamb dishes such as souvlaki (skewered and grilled meat, marinated in oil, lemon and oregano) with salmon, shrimp and chicken, as well.
