Where historic Chinatown meets chic downtown lies Asian Fusion restaurant Indigo, one of Honolulu's premier spots to see and be seen. Indigo's sleek yet unpretentious atmosphere hosts an eclectic local clientele seeking a trendy night out. Chef/owner Glenn Chu's highly imaginative menu of Eurasian and Hawaiian regional cuisine shows great influence from his childhood: his Chinese grandmother's elaborate holiday feasts, the Taoist principle of balance, and his favorite Julia Child TV show, to name a few. But it's his native Hawaiian creativity and attention to flavor that have earned him respect on the national epicurean scene. (He has been featured in Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines.) Just a handful of selections from the dim sum menu will show you why the attention and praise have been well-deserved: Try goat cheese won tons with four-fruit sauce and Thousand Loved Crab Cakes with chipotle aioli. Delicious soups and salad, such as roasted tomato garlic crab soup or the Asian Caesar salad with poached ahi, precede savory entrées, including black pepper and ginger ham shanks or raspberry-hoisin Shanghai duck. Artful desserts are made in-house, including a chocolate "volcano" so dramatic its arrival is announced by the restaurant's gong.
Full bar. Serving lunch Tue-Fri, dinner Tue-Sat. Closed Sun-Mon.
"Prepare yourself for some interesting dining. Proprietor-chef Glenn Chu is a master of East-West synthesis, and we could make a meal out of his dim sum nouveau: his goat cheese wontons with four fruit sauce, his gin doi filled with roast"- Gayot
