DETAILS

Always loud and always hopping, Olive Tree Cafe on Kilauea Avenue packs in locals who love the authentic Greek food and BYOB policy. Stop by the adjacent market and pick up a six-pack or a bottle of wine before heading over. With no corkage fee and extremely reasonable menu prices, Olive Tree proves one of the most economical dinner deals in town. (It's been named best restaurant in Hawaii under $20 by Honolulu magazine.) Order at the counter, and grab a table if you can: It's the boisterous yet friendly atmosphere that will epitomize your experience here. Chef/owner Savas Mojarrad's quick and healthy Mediterranean fare avoids the use of frozen and canned goods, preservatives and artificial ingredients wherever possible. Not-to-miss starters include the likes of stuffed grape leaves, hummus and tabouli salad, followed by an entrée menu consisting primarily of souvlaki, or marinated meat skewers available in fish, chicken or lamb. Everything, from the falafel sandwiches down to the fresh seafood platters, is freshly prepared and consistently delicious, and many diners choose the chef's nightly special. Favorites include chicken saffron and imam bayaldi, loosely translated as baked stuffed eggplant that is "so good your head will fall off." For dessert, an order of the locally famed baklava will instantly cause you to yell out "Opa!"

Cash only. No alcohol available. BYOB. Serving dinner nightly. "This place gets packed early and feels a bit frenetic, especially in finding a table. If you allow yourself to calmly enter these waters, you can enjoy a nice meal of fast and yummy Greek food. Open up the bottle of wine you brought along and watch the people. At times, it feels like a sidewalk cafe in Athens."
- Matthew Gray, Honolulu Star-Advertiser
