In a low-slung building in Montrose, tough to overlook with its bright yellow exterior, El Pueblito has long been a popular stop for Mexican food with a twist. One major draw is the fantastic patio, which is lighted at night with tiki torches and stringed lights for a hazy Mexican resort feel. The owners are from Guatemala, so while the food here is mostly familiar Mexican and Tex-Mex, it has a Central American accent. This translates into tropical flavors in many of the dishes, black beans often in place of refried beans, plantains and yucca as sides, and an addictive pineapple-based salsa. There are seafood items aplenty, and the food presentation impresses. The weekend breakfasts are well executed and a great value.

"The cilantro-spiked salsa, which manages to be hot and cooling simultaneously, is in a class by itself."
Houston Press
