Facing the bustle of lower Westheimer, Hugo’s from lauded chef-owner Hugo Ortega serves some of the very best Mexican food in Houston. The cuisine is regional Mexican, not Tex-Mex, so you’ll find no chips and salsa here. But you can feast on the likes of lamb roasted in banana leaves and every kind of taco from pork to lobster. The plating is artful, and there is a lengthy wine list in addition to a wide array of tequilas. Hugo’s also does Sunday brunch in fine fashion, with one of the best and more unique buffets, plus live music from the balcony above the dining room.
Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Sat brunch 11 am–3 pm, Sun brunch buffet 10 am–2:30 pm.
James Beard Foundation: Hugo Ortega, Best Chef: Southwest finalist, 2012
"Though still a hot spot for Houston’s hippest, Hugo’s is settling into its stride as one of the city’s best restaurants. Chef Hugo Ortega, also co-owner of Backstreet Café, really shines here with the dishes from his homeland."
