Lankford Grocery

88 Dennis St
Houston, TX 77006

Average Cost: $

Phone: 713-522-9555

Categories: Breakfast, American Traditional, Sandwiches, Burgers, Home-style

Features: Handicap Access, Kid Friendly, Patio Seating, Smoke Free, Vegetarian Friendly

A friendly, anachronistic neighborhood eatery that seems oddly located near downtown, Lankford Grocery is set in old house that was once a small grocery store (hence the name). The floor undulates with the warped hardwoods, furniture is unmatched and mostly plastic, and knickknacks fill the one small dining room. The biggest draw here is the excellent hamburgers, which are properly juicy and unpretentious. Lankford begins with large hand-made patties about a third-pound in size that are grilled to order and are served with a slice of tomato, sliced white onions and an ample-sized leaf of crisp iceberg lettuce on large toasted buns. The accompanying fries are freshly made, nicely crisp and very satisfying. They also have straightforward sandwiches and daily specials, which can include those long-time Houston favorites such as an enchiladas and chicken-fried steak. Basic American breakfasts are also served here — the Saturday-only biscuits and gravy are some of the best in town. Fresh, butter-laden biscuits and thick, flavorful gravy complement each other perfectly.

Cash only. Beer available. Serving breakfast and lunch Mon–Sat. Closed Sun.

"Everything about Lankford's famous burger makes it justly revered: the thickness of the homemade patties, the perfect grill char, the amount of lettuce and other fixings they support, even the sprinkling of black pepper that flavors each bite."
