Dining at the Original Ninfa's east of downtown, you can understand how this restaurant has greatly helped in popularizing Tex-Mex in the area, even nationally, and contributed to establishing the fajita as a truly American dish. The fajitas consist of marinated, high-quality outside skirt steak in several dishes such as tacos a la Ninfa (fajitas rolled in a freshly made flour tortilla), carne asada
, enchiladas al carbon
, fajita nachos and fajitas solo
. But everything else is good here as well, especially the carnitas (tender, stewed chunks of pork), enchiladas, chicken fajitas and even the unusual Mexican-style pork ribs. The frozen Ninfaritas (margaritas) go down easily at this funky, friendly and boisterous Houston landmark. Having expanded several times since its 1973 opening and purchased in 2007 by Antone's owner Niel Morgan, the Original Ninfa's is a rambling but intimate restaurant for which Houstonians don't mind waiting to dine. Important to note: As seemingly everyone in town knows, the "Original" label needs to be emphasized, as the other area restaurants in the Ninfa's chain — under the ownership of the Serrano's chain — fall short of measuring up.
