Although cutting-edge cuisine and authentic ethnic eateries have established themselves in Houston, it's hard to think of Texas without thinking steak. Cue Vic & Anthony's, which epitomizes classic steak house. From the cocktail lounge with live piano music to the award-winning wine list and the wooded and stone-laden interior, every detail is accounted for. Tilman Fertitta, CEO of Landry's Restaurant group, brings more of a personal touch to this downtown restaurant, just across from Minute Maid Park. He and his father, Vic, toured steak houses across the country for inspiration, and their black and white family photos adorn the walls. Lobster tail, shrimp cocktail, oysters Rockefeller and other typical seafood offerings are all available, but the main attraction is clearly the USDA grain-fed beef from the Midwest. Speciality chops include the filet mignon (9 or 12 ounce), the porterhouse for two, a 16-ounce rib eye and even a couple of veal cuts. Sides get the traditional à la carte treatment and include wild mushrooms, creamed spinach and potatoes au gratin. Since you're already indulging, why not go the full nine with vanilla bean crème brûleé or the flourless chocolate cake with whipped cream and chocolate sauce.
Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving lunch Fri, dinner nightly.
Houston Press: Best Steakhouse, 2010 critics' poll
"When you are looking to impress a guest, Vic & Anthony's will cover just about every aspect of that goal."
