Besides its namesake dish, Maxine's Chicken & Waffles also serves tilapia and grits, salmon croquettes, and smothered chicken.
From the restaurant's website:
"Maxine’s Chicken & Waffles affectionately bears the name of Maxine Redmon Bunnell, who is our beloved matriarch. Maxine and her life-long husband, Ollie 'Thomas' Bunnell, are natives of Indiana and together Maxine and Thomas raised nine children, four boys and five girls on the Southside of Indianapolis. Many have tried to convince Maxine to start her own restaurant, but she graciously declined their offers. ... Maxine did share with her daughters how much cream, nutmeg and brown sugar is needed to get 'A Taste of Love in Every Bite'; now we share this taste of love with you."
No alcohol available. Serving lunch daily, dinner Wed–Sat. Sat–Sun breakfast/brunch from 9 am until close (6 pm Sun).
"Yes, the place is located in the back of a filling station. And yes, the chicken and waffles are served together. No, you don’t have to eat them that way. And while the savory/sweet combo (with generous dollops of peach butter) remains the gateway entree at this downtown soul-food spot, the menu delves much deeper into namesake Maxine Redmon Bunnell’s repertoire. ... It’s the food that matters here—and it’s worth a pit stop."
