A diner since 1938, Metro Diner features plentiful portions of home-style comfort food as well as one of Jacksonville's most renowned breakfasts. Specialties include the Breakfast Pie, which is layers of eggs, cheese, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers and herbs in a red-skinned potato pie crust. Other recommendations include crab cake Benedict, omelets, lox and bagels, corned beef hash, 10-inch pancakes (try the banana-granola, which the chef says don’t need syrup), Belgian waffles, and pound cake French toast. Cheese grits, country ham and turkey sausage are among the sides. Weekend brunch includes the weekday breakfast fare plus many of the lunch specialties, such as chicken potpie, and chicken salad or grouper sandwiches. Lunch favorites include meat loaf, pot roast, chili, stuffed tomatoes, portobello sandwiches and veggie burgers. Try the Key lime pie or strawberry shortcake for dessert.

"This eatery, just south of San Marco Square, serves up a pot pie sure to stir up fond childhood memories. Filled with fresh veggies and chicken and enclosed in a flaky biscuit crust, this dish may make Mom jealous or give up cooking altogether."
