DETAILS
Every visit to Murray's Ice Creams & Cookies in Westport is a new experience. Owner Murray Nixon keeps her customers enticed by offering a daily changing menu of 16 house-made flavors chosen from nearly 200 possibilities that have been developed since the shop opened in 1984. The one constant - the cream cheese-based chocolate flake fromage - might be joined by One Drunk Monk, a Frangelico-based ice cream with hazelnut and espresso chocolate flakes; Frigitte Bordeaux, a cherry chocolate ice cream filled with Bordeaux-soaked cherries and chocolate crumbles; fudge raspberry rhapsody; or pink grapefruit sorbet. You can have your scoop served in a house-made waffle cone, hand-mixed with candies (a Smooshie), malted by hand (a Lumpie), or atop a house-made brownie or cookie. The shop gets busy on hot summer nights, but you can use your time in line to read through the long, colorful menu or ask those around you for suggestions. The servers will be happy to give you a taste to make sure you are pleased. The shop also features a full-service soda fountain and coffee bar. When Murray's closes for the winter in mid-December, customers line up for several blocks to take home pints and quarts of the remaining flavors, all priced at 50 percent off. They line up again in March to welcome Nixon back. Parking out front is shared by all Westport merchants, so you might have to park at an outer lot and walk a block or two. Cash only. Serving during lunch and dinner hours Wed-Sun. Closed Mon-Tue. Closed from mid-December through mid-March. "The dilemma at Murray's ... is which direction to take your dessert. Even if you settle on one of its homemade ice creams before getting there-the cream-cheese based chocolate flake fromage, say, or the lighter mojito sorbet-you'll have a hard time making it past the cookie display without questioning your decision."
