Vegans, vegetarians and health nuts alike rejoice at the countless options at M Café de Chaya. The macrobiotic cuisine is so colorful and vibrant (not to mention good for you) that anyone with a passion for food should be more than satisfied, not just those with a laundry list of dietary limitations. Take advantage of the pleasant, European-style sidewalk-seating and nibble on breakfast offerings such as scrambled tofu, smoked salmon Benedict or blueberry pancakes with tempeh bacon. Lunch brings a crowd and a variety of salads, wraps and sandwiches such as The M Chopped salad and an inspired tuna burger, served with avocado, daikon sprouts, red onion and spicy mayo. A display case full of pastries, cookies and chocolates proves hard to resist. Eating this well usually requires a post-lunch nap at the desk, but - surprise! - minimally processed, locally grown foods not only taste fresher, they make you feel better.

Kids' menu. No alcohol available. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.

"While the new Melrose Avenue spot has an appealing, casual vibe, there's nothing casual about the way the food is put together. Following the principles Kushi laid down in his book The Macrobiotic Way, [Chef Shigefumi] Tachibe has used his considerable skills and imagination to create dishes that are not only virtuous, but delicious enough that many of the non-faithful will want to check out what's on offer."
