Canele

3219 Glendale Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90039

Average Cost: $$

Phone: 323-666-7133

Categories: Brunch, Contemporary, French

Features: Smoke Free, Vegetarian Friendly

You’ll learn to love thy neighbor at Canelé, with its large, communal table by the front window. Though this French eatery might not make for a good first date, it’s a great way to stay abreast of the best dishes — proximity to other diners lends itself to discussion of recommendations. The rest of the loud and frequently packed dining room and the open kitchen give Canelé an intimate, neighborhood feel. Chef/co-owner Corina Weibel, who studied under Nancy Silverton at Campanile, crafts her ever-changing menu (written semi-legibly on chalkboards) based on seasonal ingredients from the farmers’ market. She successfully fuses elements of California cuisine with southern French favorites in dishes such as beef bourguignon, pan-seared snapper, and duck confit with red rice. Spaghetti aglio olio remains on the menu as a tribute to the previous restaurant (Osteria Nonni) occupying the space. Finish your meal with an order of melt-in-your-mouth flan, or just enjoy the complimentary pastries (canelés) for which the restaurant is named.

Reservations not accepted. Beer and wine available. Serving dinner Tue–Sun. Sat–Sun brunch 10 am–3 pm. Closed Mon.

Zagat 2011: 23 food rating (very good to excellent)

“This is cooking worthy of the good china.”
