DETAILS
Fashioned into a 1940s-style diner, Nickel Diner draws crowds of hungry hungry hipsters and downtown brunchers with its quick service, bottomless cups of decent coffee and solid diner fare. Their Maple Bacon Donut has garnered the attention of many food publications and TV shows. The hype is well-deserved, though. A thin layer of maple glaze with substantial bacon chunks (bigger than bits at least) top the oversized (a fork and knife may be necessary) cake donut. The Irish Car Bomb Donut and Nutella Donut are among other flavors offered. French toast, eggs-any-way, burgers and huevos rancheros make up the rest of the menu. To help ease a rough morning, there's the Hangover Helper - a scramble with bacon, Italian sausage, potatoes, cheese, avocado and salsa. It's tastier than just the sum of its parts.  No alcohol available. Serving breakfast and lunch Tue-Sun, dinner Tue-Sat. Closed Mon
"The menu includes the pancakes, fried eggs and bacon without which there would be rebellion in the streets, but Nickel Diner also bakes its own bread, prepares elaborate cakes and maple-bacon doughnuts, and makes delicious fried catfish with corn cakes. The lunch crowd may come for the Lowrider Burger, but they don't seem to mind the candied pecans in the chicken salad."
