"Good food – good karma" is the motto at Third Avenue Cafe, a cozy and funky little neighborhood restaurant that still bears traces of its former life as a pharmacy. Third Avenue Cafe is acclaimed for its "v"-studded menu — which stands not for "victory" but for dishes that are vegan or can be made vegan on request. You can even get a vegan Reuben sandwich or black bean burger. Meatless entrées include the savory Portobella Napoleon, a marinated and grilled mushroom cap layered with feta, roasted veggies and provolone and curry roasted veggies. The Seafood Hot Brown, with pan-seared grouper, tiger shrimp, bacon and tomato slices on house-made focaccia and topped with Mornay sauce, is a creative variation on the local tradition. The luscious desserts, like everything on the menu, are house-made. Sidewalk patio dining is available. Trivial Pursuit cards on the tables help pass time until your food arrives.
Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner Mon–Sat. Closed Sun.
"Some of the vegetarian sandwiches — notably the vegetarian Reuben ($8.75), a savory, smoky, saucy concoction featuring tempeh and sauerkraut — are as good as their meaty counterparts."
