DETAILS

Since opening their first Wick’s Pizza in 1991, Michael and Meredith Wickliffe have expanded to several  Louisville-area locations. The Highlands site on Baxter Avenue is the original. While it mainly caters to a younger, collegiate crowd with its colorful, tie-dyed, classic-rock atmosphere, families won’t feel threatened. Mountains of toppings weigh down the hearty pizzas. Specialty pies include the popular Big Wick (with tomatoes, onions, Italian sausage, beef, pepperoni, green and black olives, mushrooms, and green peppers), the Mighty Meaty Wick, Wick’s Veggie Delight, Wick’s Cajun BBQ Chicken, Grilled Fajita Chicken and Wick’s Bacon & Ranch — the latter two have a base of ranch dressing rather than the traditional tomato sauce. Pasta lovers can choose from lasagna, several varieties of spaghetti, and ravioli. The extensive sandwich menu offers no fewer than 16 options, including a BLT with provolone. There are also salads and, if you need them, appetizers. For dessert, try the unusual Tye-Dye Cheese Cake, with swirls of raspberry, kiwi and mango toppings.

Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner until late night daily.

"Our choice — a 12-inch "Supreme" — was really first-rate. The crust was relatively thin (but sturdy enough to bear a load of toppings) and crackery-crisp, the way I like it."
