Best Hot Dogs

Chris & Rob’s Chicago’s Taste Authority (formerly Joey D’s), co-owned by Chris and Rob Dubnecay, is a combination hot dog, Italian beef sandwich and pizza stand. Chicago natives themselves, the Dubnecays thankfully have retained the restaurant’s Windy City-themed décor and menu. If Minnesotans want to eat an authentic Chicago dog, they have to pay a little respect to the city that birthed the Bulls, the Bears and the Blackhawks. The hot dogs (Vienna Beef brand) are thick and juicy; the Chicago version is piled high with green relish, diced onions, sliced tomatoes, yellow mustard, dill pickles, celery salt and the essential "sport peppers" on a poppy seed bun. In cold weather, folks either relax inside or get their grub to go. And in warm weather, the spacious, umbrella-tabled patio is a great place to sit. (Or take a two-block walk over to nearby Minnehaha Park, and grab a bench.) The Italian beef sandwich has its own fan club. Topped with sweet or hot peppers and served au jus, it has just the right spicy/juicy/chewy thing going on. (It also may be the reason there’s a roll of paper towels on each table.) The menu is filled out by Windy City standards such as chili-cheese fries, pizza (both thick- and thin-crust) and meatball sandwiches, as well as burgers.

Kids' menu. Beer available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Closes 7 pm Sun.

"The bun is seared on the griddle, the hot peppers are homemade giardenera, the beef itself is dripping with that singular brown beefy goodness that makes you want to watch televised sports and unspool yards of paper towels to use as your napkin."
