DETAILS
When hunger pangs hit - the kind you just can't soothe in your own kitchen - head over to Keys Cafe for reliably delicious, home-style Midwestern cooking, especially for the breakfast served all day, which Bon Appetit has called one of the eight best breakfasts in the country. The original Keys Cafe (on Raymond Avenue in St. Paul) opened in 1973 and is still run by owner Barbara Hunn and her extended family. Pink flamingos, pine paneling and nostalgic photos and memorabilia decorate the restaurant. You may have to wait awhile after giving your name to the hostess, but the food is well worth it. Breakfast favorites include "The Usual" (eggs, hash browns or American fries, and your choice of meat), pancakes, French toast, and steak and eggs. And lunch and dinner specialties include house-made soups and chili, specialty salads and a roast turkey dinner available year-round.
Beer and wine available. Serving breakfast and lunch daily, dinner Tue-Sat. "The bakery makes fresh goodies every day, and the pies and cookie dough have become popular enough to warrant syndication at a couple of area grocery stores."
