When hunger pangs hit — the kind you just can’t soothe in your own
kitchen — head over to Keys Cafe for reliably delicious, home-style
Midwestern cooking, especially for the breakfast served all day, which
Bon Appetit
has called one of the eight best breakfasts in the country. The
original Keys Cafe (on Raymond Avenue in St. Paul) opened in 1973 and is
still run by owner Barbara Hunn and her extended family (the
restaurant’s website details the genealogy). Pink flamingos, pine
paneling, and nostalgic photos and memorabilia decorate the restaurant.
You may have to wait awhile after giving your name to the hostess, but
the food is well worth it. Breakfast favorites include "The Usual"
(eggs, hash browns or American fries, and your choice of meat),
pancakes, French toast, and steak and eggs. And lunch and dinner
specialties include house-made soups and chili, specialty salads, and a
roast turkey dinner available year-round.
Full bar. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
"The bakery makes fresh goodies every day, and the pies and cookie dough
have become popular enough to warrant syndication at a couple of area
grocery stores."
