When Rainbow Chinese Restaurant & Bar moved from the strip mall across the street to its current bistro-like space, its reputation as the Twin Cities' most upscale Chinese restaurant was confirmed, without sacrificing the authenticity that has helped build a passionate following since 1987. Word on the street, and in the always-busy waiting area of the restaurant itself, is that you'll want to try anything with black bean sauce, chef/owner Tammy Wong's special ingredient. Szechwan won tons and cream cheese won tons are reliable favorites for starters, as are any of the pan-fried noodle dishes. For entrées, spicy meat lovers will enjoy the popular Singapore chow mai fun,
a delicious concoction of stir-fried vermicelli, pork, shrimp, bean sprouts, scallions and a hint of curry. The jai mai fun
is a delicious and slightly less spicy vegetarian option.
