DETAILS
There are enough gourmet offerings at Bread & Company to make a food lover hyperventilate. Founded by Anne Clay and now presided over by son (and former Alabama football star) John, Bread & Company was Nashville's first specialty bakery and café to offer fresh-baked, European-style artisan breads. Bread & Company expanded significantly in size and scope to include extensive dine-in facilities and wondrously decked out carry-out counters and refrigerated cases. The short list of breads and rolls is utilitarian by design: These baked goods are meant to complement and complete meals from sunup to sundown. Top-flight breakfasts include bagels, croissants, English muffins, Danish pastries, omelets, waffles, pancakes, French toast and the like: You really can't go wrong with a made-to-order country ham, cheddar and purple onion omelet with a side of crunchy, whole-wheat farm bread. The extensive lunch and dinner offerings change by the season and include soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, made-to-order panini, grilled chicken and vegetables, quesadillas, twice-baked potatoes, and turkey meat loaf. Quality is impressive, and quantities are substantial: The whole sandwiches, which come with potato chips on the side, are enough to split between two people. (Half-sandwiches are also offered.) Baked desserts include fabulous fruit tarts, cheesecake, lemon or orange pound cake, orange sponge cake, blueberry bread pudding and dark chocolate cake. No alcohol available. Generally serving breakfast, lunch and early dinner daily. Hours vary by location.
