DETAILS
Known by the more in-the-know downtown business crowd as Dan's Cafe or just plain Dan's since its 1991 debut, owner Dan Robinson's Dandgure's Classic Southern Cookin' (pronounced Dan-jures) lives up to the self-billing. The bountiful meat-and-three offerings top those of many of their more-publicized cousins in the city's indigenous country-cooking crowd. We've sampled the best fried pork chops this side of our Kentucky-bred Grandma Susie's, for instance: none of the grease and with two chops per serving without even asking for seconds. Notable sides include the mac and cheese, turnip greens, fried corn, and squash casserole. Leave room for a dish of banana pudding, fruit cobbler or a slice of pie. Wash it down with what the eatery boasts is "the best lemonade in town." (We don't argue.) Added bonus: The room features tables farther apart and more easily maneuvered than some cramped competitors. No alcohol available. Serving lunch Mon-Fri. Closed Sat-Sun.
