Genuine-article fried fish served on white bread with dill pickles, hot sauce and mustard doesn't get much better than at Eastside Fish. Opened in 2003 in a colorfully painted former Domino's pizza joint on East Nashville's busy Gallatin Pike, the takeout eatery specializes in gargantuan sandwiches that they boast are "the crunkest fish in town." That's hard to argue. We challenge you to find crunker. The cornmeal-crusted whiting, catfish, trout or tilapia fillets are pulled from the fryer in just the nick of time for the perfect crunch outside and piping hot but tender flesh inside. The King Fish sandwich, which carries the owner's nickname, features several substantial fillets of fish at a bargain price. Seems impossible to finish one until you find yourself carefully ripping off chunks of steaming fish from inside the brown paper sack while you're driving home or to the office. Burgers, Polish sausage and fried bologna sandwiches also are offered. Slaw, turnip greens, white or green beans, fries, onion rings, hushpuppies, and spaghetti can be ordered on the side. There is a counter top or two for inside dining, but nearly everyone orders for takeout. "The fish is cream-moist and delicate, its brittle crust mottled with splotches of four-alarm Louisiana hot sauce and enveloped in a harmony of crunchy raw onion, dill pickle chips, and smooth yellow mustard."
