CUISINE: Breakfast, Brunch

DETAILS
Nashville is not lacking for brunch options. Many-a-restaurant make a killing by putting up a few white tablecloths and charging $12 for a plate of eggs. We're happy to report that The Garden Brunch Cafe serves no such typical brunch, however. A restaurant exclusively dedicated to that glorious in-betweeny meal that goes both ways, TGBC offers a handful of dishes you won't find anywhere else in town. Karl and Jennifer Carpenter opened the restaurant in 2009, and though flying under the radar a bit, it has secured a small cult following and stays busy on the weekends for its creative take on brunch fare. Front and center are the delightfully decadent bananas Foster pancakes with caramelized bananas, walnuts and whipped cream. It's more than one person should attempt to tackle - particularly since it comes with two eggs and turkey sausage or bacon (yeesh!) - but more than likely you'll be fending off forks from whomever you're dining with. Other entrées scoring high marks are the fish and grits (definitely go blackened over grilled) with cheddar grits and eggs, and the Germantown West Benny, featuring smoked salmon, spinach, capers and house-made Hollandaise. Kids' menu. Mimosas available. Serving breakfast-brunch 9 am-2 pm Fri-Sun. Closed Mon-Thu. "Nashvillians regard pancakes with almost the same fervor as biscuits or cornbread and will not be disappointed with The Garden's stacks."
- Nancy Vienneau, The Tennessean, July 24, 2009
