DETAILS
With longstanding rock nightclubs Exit/In and The End within stumbling distance, Elliston Place's The Gold Rush since the mid-1970s has provided a home-away-from-home for music fans, musicians and anyone looking for a generously poured drink and cheap Tex-Mex eats. Several years ago, new ownership refurbished the interior and revamped the menu to include seven different burgers, five pizza varieties, more than a dozen sandwiches and an array of soups, salads and appetizers. What wasn't altered is the piece de resistance from the saloon's bygone era of hippies and halter tops (OK, the hippies and halter tops are still here): the Gold Rush bean roll. Truly the gold standard for Nashville bar food excellence, the bean roll features a 10-inch tortilla filled with refried beans, cheese, tomato and onion topped with red sauce, cheese, sour cream and a jalapeño pepper. Yes, it's basically a bean burrito (and how!), but The Gold Rush arrived in Nashville before "burrito" was part of the local lexicon. For locals who want even more of a great thing, other bean roll varieties add beef, spicy chicken and barbecued pork to the magical mix. The patty melt with crispy crinkle fries makes a mighty fine meal as well. Breakfast tacos and surprisingly excellent French toast headline the bargain-priced brunch. Age 21-and-over admission since smoking is allowed. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner until late night daily. Sat-Sun brunch 11 am-2:30 pm.
