Talk about a trip back in time. One of Nashville's most historic businesses, The Peanut Shop opened in downtown's Arcade indoor mall way back in 1927. Back then it was a Planters peanut company store, one of scores of them throughout the country. Old-timers fondly recall a childhood of gobbling fresh-roasted samples from someone dressed as the Planters Mr. Peanut strolling along downtown streets or through the Italian architecture-inspired Arcade mall, which opened in 1903. Known as The Peanut Shop since 1962, Mr. Peanut (or more likely his great-great-grandson) still makes regular appearances there. And the store still roasts peanuts, cashews and other nuts each day in a roasting oven delightfully dubbed "Little Bertha." The Southern delicacy of boiled peanuts - an acquired taste - also is prepared on site. Although the sweet stuff is not prepared at the store, The Peanut Shop also offers an array of candies, chocolates and dried fruit, and your selections are still weighed on an old-fashioned scale.
