DETAILS
Having spent a good bit of his youth in San Antonio, Terrell Raley dreamed of a combination soda fountain, burger joint, outdoor German biergarten and Texas ice house long before he made his mark as a bartender and restaurateur in Nashville. Consider dream realized in a major sort of way with the late 2011 opening of The Pharmacy Burger Parlor & Beer Garden. It's just around the corner from proprietor and co-owner Raley's bar-restaurant hit Holland House in rejuvenating East Nashville. Raley recruited kid brother Trent Raley, of late a sous chef at Hillsboro Village staple Sunset Grill, to man the kitchen. There wondrous things are happening with house-made, locally sourced burgers and sausages, dense but squishy buns made special by local bakery kingpin Provence, and fresh-cut regular and sweet potato fries. Early on, the Farm Burger is staking its claim as the signature menu item. This behemoth comes topped with country ham, bacon and a fried egg for good measure. (You won't leave hungry.) The soda fountain's sodas, shakes and malts  show the same craft and skill as from the highly regarded bar at its sister Holland House. And The Pharmacy's craft beer selection on both draft and in bottles impresses. Did we mention they have an enormous, lush beer garden with plenty of picnic tables? It very well could be Nashville's most idyllic spot for an outdoor beverage. Kids' menu. Beer available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. "The Germans have a word, 'Gemutlichkeit.' It's a grand term that describes a comfortable friendliness, a sense of snug congeniality. The Pharmacy team has captured that overriding spirit."
- Nancy Vienneau, for The Tennessean, March 9, 2012
