DETAILS
North Nashville meat-and-three restaurant Silver Sands Cafe sits off of the beaten path - just a shotgun cinder block, really - located a couple of blocks west of the Nashville Farmers' Market. But for the money, not only does The Sands indeed boast what is some of the best soul food in Nashville, it also serves one of the most sublime and most unsung country breakfasts in town. For lunch, we could go on about the fried chicken wings, the beef tips, the fried pork chops, the liver, the baked ribs, the white beans, the turnip greens, the lima beans, the sweet potatoes, the macaroni and cheese and the fried pies - all among the city's best renditions. The wings and the beef tips should already be available when you go through the cafeteria-style line for breakfast - and you can watch the cooks begin the process of breading and frying the pork chops, too - but you'll definitely want to save room for the more traditional breakfast stuffs: real-deal country ham, sausages and bacon; unbelievable fried potatoes; outstanding grits; feathery house-made biscuits; and perfectly cooked-to-order eggs and pancakes. There are about a dozen tables or so for dining in, and it's quite popular for takeout. No alcohol available. Serving breakfast Mon–Fri, lunch Sun–Fri. Closed Sat. "What's good with smothered pork steak? (Answer: stewed apples and fried potatoes with onions.) In the course of filling my tray, the helpful gals referred to me as honey, darlin', sweetheart and baby."
