High-profile restaurateur Tom Morales, whose Nashville-based TomKats Catering has been the go-to choice for movie locations for many years, has another box-office hit on his hands with downtown's The Southern Steak & Oyster. Capping a jammed-packed first several months, The Southern was named one of Esquire magazine's Best New Restaurants of 2012, with Morales's 22-year-old daughter Kendall Morales being named Hostess of the Year. Located on the ground floor of The Pinnacle Building across from the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and diagonally from the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, The Southern manages to be country and citified at the same time, not unlike a lot of the hit tunes cut in Music City recording studios. Reclaimed rustic doors rest against the walls, while an oversized oblong bar and expansive bar-area seating and patio set the stage for conversation and good food. Architect Seab Tuck, known for his work on The Country Music Hall of Fame and at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, counts The Southern as his first ground-up design for his former Auburn University frat brother Morales. The oyster bar and wood-fired kitchen buzz with activity, while semi-enclosed booths along the sides allow for more private conversations. The menu features Southern-style takes on dishes familiar to diners at Morales-led restaurants such as Franklin's Saffire: Pan-Fried Cornmeal-Crusted Catfish, Chicken Fried Chicken, Mac and Three Cheeses, Fish N' Grits and gnaw-worthy Double-Cut Smoked Pork Chop and South of Somewhere T-Bone. Added bonus: two hours of free parking in The Pinnacle. Reservations suggested. Full bar. Serving breakfast and lunch Mon-Fri, dinner nightly. Late-night Fri-Sat. Sat-Sun brunch 10 am-3 pm.
