Taco Mamacita

CUISINE: Mexican, Tacos

DETAILS
Taco Mamacita is the latest addition to charming little Edgehill Village, which seemingly sprouted up overnight. It's the second location of the Chattanooga-based eatery, which appears to have its eyes on regional expansion, with reasonably priced modern Mexican fare, creative drink specials, and, of course, their own t-shirts. In the space previously occupied by Rosario's, Mamacita completely renovated and expanded the place, with funky light fixtures, large wood booths and a smallish but pleasant shaded patio. Billing itself as a "casual funky-fusion taco joint," Mamacita's menu brings a lot of creativity to the table and displays a light touch with the "fusion." Excellent starters include the queso fundido, served with warm tortillas in a dangerously hot skillet - dip but don't touch - and their signature tortilla soup, served hot-pot style. It's tough to go wrong with any of the tacos such as a nice rendition of carnitas, the Po' Boy BLT (bacon and fried shrimp: together at last), and the Loaded Gyro, with thinly sliced lamb, baja white sauce, cucumber and feta. The bar features flavored margaritas, a rotating cast of mojitos, and the best friend of the college student - or the budget savvy drunk - the Dirty Sanchez, a shot of cheap tequila and a PBR. It may not compete with the Nolensville Road eateries in terms of authenticity (not that they're trying to), but it's lighthearted and a good fit for the neighborhood. Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily. "Overall, the ingredients were fresh, and the tacos bulged with enough toppings that a $9 combo of two tacos with a side makes an ample meal."
- Carrington Fox, Nashville Scene, Jan. 21, 2010
