Best Tapas

This stylish gem on 19th Street reclaims tapas for the Spanish cause. Just a few blocks from the ultra-crowded heavy hitters around Union Square (Gramercy Tavern, Union Square Cafe, Craft), Boqueria occupies a much-needed neighborhood restaurant niche, with its casual, unrushed atmosphere. Tall, wooden tables populate the middle of the dining room, while long, elevated booths line each wall of the narrow, beige-colored space. Late-twenty-somethings, European couples and the bar crowd coexist seamlessly. Cured meats, specialty cheeses and Spanish small plates are the order of the day. ... The supremely rich bacon-wrapped date stuffed with almonds and Valdéon cheese might knock you out of your chair, while salchichón (spiced pork sausage cured with garlic and herbs) and jamon serrano (15-month aged Spanish ham) are among pork treatments. Larger plates include paella and roasted skirt steak.

"You can let your appetite wander, and if you're smart, you'll make sure it heads in the direction of dishes like squid salad, patatas bravas, and lamb shank."
- Frank Bruni, The New York Times
