Caracas Arepa Bar

Average Cost: $$

Phone: 212-529-2314

Categories: Latin/South American , Brunch , Venezuelan

Features: Handicap Access , Kid Friendly , Smoke Free , Vegetarian Friendly

Tiny Venezuelan spot Caracas Arepa Bar packs in diners for their signature arepas - corn flour sandwiches of sorts filled with a variety of meats, cheese and vegetables. Nosh on starters such the unique Venezuelan-style guacamole with thick house-made chips or any of the appetizers involving plantains. Of the arepas, we'd recommend the Los Muchachos - grilled chorizo, spicy white cheese, jalapeños and sauteed peppers - or the La Mulata with grilled white cheese, jalapeños, red peppers, fried sweet plantains and black beans. One arepa suffices as a snack and two make for a satisfying, very cheap meal. "... Under the stewardship of chef Ilse Parra, it has expanded its menu to include entrees, appetizers, desserts and more - and not just on the weekends. Caracas now boasts one of the most consistent kitchens of any cheap food spot in New York."
- Peter Meehan, The New York Times, Aug. 2, 2006

New York magazine: Critics' Pick
Zagat 2013: 25 food rating (very good to excellent)
Time Out New York: Critics' Pick Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner daily. Sat-Sun brunch noon-3 pm.
