Kin Shop

Average Cost: $$$

Phone: 212-675-4295

Categories: Contemporary , Thai

Features:

Harold Dieterle (the original Top Chef winner) and Alicia Nosenzo's tribute to Thai cuisine, Kin Shop, has torched many a tongue and garnered plenty of critical praise since opening in late 2010. You'll see a handful of traditional dishes - spicy duck laab salad, Northern Thai-style curry noodles - but inventive contemporary dishes utilizing Thai flavors compose much of the menu with the likes of squid ink and hot sesame oil soup, jungle skate and calamari, and fried garlic and cumin lamb ribs. Bonus points for the handful of interesting signature cocktails, a well-chosen beer list and a wine list with many affordable selections. From the restaurant's website:
"Kin shop is a contemporary Thai restaurant opened by Chef Harold Dieterle and Alicia Nosenzo. The duo chose the name, kin shop, because 'kin,' is the Thai word for 'to eat' and the restaurant is the 'kin' to their acclaimed restaurant Perilla, a mere seven-minute walk away. Kin Shop's menu features both contemporary reinterpretations of traditional Thai dishes and wholly new items inspired by Thai ingredients."

"Top Chef champ Harold Dieterle channels his Southeast Asian travels into the menu at his sophomore eatery, which serves classic Thai street food alongside more upmarket Thai-inspired dishes."
- Time Out New York

"The curries at Kin Shop are ground in-house, and if you wish to add extra heat or a dash of sour, there are pots of white vinegar at each table, as well as Thai chiles that will curl the nose hairs of even the most seasoned reality-TV judge."
