DETAILS
When it comes to sushi-eating etiquette, the customer is not always right at Sushi of Gari, and at Gari 46, its Midtown sister. This tiny haven for sashimi devotees perfectly sauces the fish before it arrives on your plate and withholds soy sauce and wasabi in a noble attempt to prevent diners from drowning the fresh flavor in a sea of soy sauce. Chef Masatoshi "Gari" Sugio, who enjoys a bit of a cult following for his contributions to the avant-garde sushi movement, has been preparing sushi since age 17, so why not trust the chef with the popular omakase (literal translation: trust), a selection of the best seasonal fish cuts of the day. Both raw and slightly cooked offerings are innovative and accentuated by Gari's signature sauces, from bluefin tuna with ponzu mousse or the Japanese red snapper salad to "torched" squid with sea urchin sauce. For dessert, there's tempura ice cream. Beer, wine and sake available. Serving lunch Mon-Fri, dinner nightly. "Sushi snobs are an imperious bunch, but mention the name Masatoshi 'Gari' Sugio in their midst and they begin squealing like a bunch of boy-band groupies."
- New York magazine
