DETAILS
The first United States offspring of the famed Munich beer hall and restaurant, Hofbräuhaus in historic Newport, Ky., just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, shares the Munich original's recipes as well as the boisterous beer hall vibe. Originally a warehouse for beer from the circa-1500s Hofbräu brewery, Munich's Hofbräuhaus brewery-restaurant opened in Germany in 1828 and remains one of the city's biggest tourist attractions. Opened in 2003, the Cincinnati-area version offers four on-site-brewed beers year-round as well as a variety of seasonal brews. Dine in the festival hall, a great room, with imported woods and stained glass, interact with the polka band if you're lucky, or sit at the bar that surrounds large copper brewing tanks that keep Das Reinheitsgebot (the German beer purity law) in check. After perusing the classic German-cuisine menu, try classic sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, bierwurst and bratwurst. Another recommended entrée is the roasted pork shank with sauerkraut and potato dumpling.  Full bar. Serving lunch and dinner daily "You may have trouble pronouncing some of the dishes - kartoffelpfannkuchen (potato pancakes) - but you'll love tasting the Hofbrauhaus' authentic German cuisine."
- The Cincinnati Enquirer
