First-time visitors to Bette’s Oceanview Diner in Berkeley will know soon enough, based on the line out the door, that it’s widely considered to be one of the best breakfasts in the Bay Area as many weekend breakfast-goers wait up to two hours for a table. In the style of an old-fashioned diner, black-and-white checkered tile covers the floor, a neon sign overlooks the booths, and chrome finishes decorate the bar. But Bette’s, open since 1982, is not simply for the nostalgic: An eclectic mix of business executives, families, tourists and students make up the patronage, plus a jukebox plays everything from modern country to opera. Bette’s is well-known for its fluffy soufflé pancakes, made with whipped egg whites and topped with banana rum, apple brandy, fruit or chocolate. Huevos rancheros, lox egg scrambles, corned beef hash with poached eggs and fluffy omelets round out the breakfast menu. "On the right side is a perfect breakfast
and brunch spot with the atmosphere of a classic American diner. On the
left side is Bette’s To Go, which offers a wide variety of foods for
takeout, including exceptional baked goods. If you cannot get into the
diner at least pop in for one vanilla macaroon; these are the best I
have ever had."
