Best Indian

A standout among several fine Indian restaurants in the East Bay, Breads of India and Gourmet Curries serves relaxed meals with plenty of great naan, the bread of India. The nicely decorated dining rooms at each location are less hurried than most area Indian eateries but can be crowded, so diners try to arrive early for dinner. The food at Breads of India is highly influenced by Californian dining trends. A small, rotating menu features vegetarian-friendly entrées and uses only free-range meats. Dishes are generally lighter than typical Indian fare, and menu item descriptions are detailed enough to inform diners of what’s in each dish and how it’s prepared. Specializing in Indian comfort food, the daily specials are the strongest items on the menu and have included chicken tikka masala, saag, dal, salmon tandoori, mint chutney and curries. Then there’s the naan: Served hot from the oven, Breads of India’s version is whole wheat-based and thus denser. Servers will recommend breads to go with dishes, much like wine pairings. Mango lassi and chai tea are popular accompaniments for a spicy meal.

Reservations suggested. Beer and wine available. Serving lunch and dinner Mon–Sat. Closed Sun and between meals.

"Daily specials at this popular but cramped pan-Indian restaurant include one lamb dish, one poultry dish, and two vegetarian curries, plus a tandoori treat."
