A step or several above the fast-food burger chains, and now with locations throughout the state, no ingredient is ever frozen at Johnnie’s Charcoal Broiler, now run by brothers Rick and David Haynes, who work hard to keep father Johnnie Haynes’ recipes a secret. Johnnie opened the first location in 1971 with about $10,000 in savings. Menu recommendations include the old-fashioned hamburger with mustard, pickles and onions; the bacon cheeseburger; the frankfurter with chili and cheese; and handmade giant onion rings. Chicken-fried steak, grilled shaved ham or turkey sandwiches, and even a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich are also available, as is a meatless veggie burger. Sides other than onion rings include house-made vegetable soup, baked beans, and cottage cheese and tomatoes. Cream pie is the featured dessert.

"Although several toppings are available for the burgers, Johnnie's Sauce is the one I have always enjoyed. Cooked each day on the stove for about five hours, this hickory sauce is made with a secret blend of ingredients, and can be purchased for take-home. I would say this sauce is a must try, and if you are not sure you will like it you can order it on the side."
