The News & Observer has awarded Best Barbecue honors to Allen & Son.
From Independent Weekly:
"One
of the last places around that still uses hardwood to cook its
barbecue. Side dishes like barbecue beans and Brunswick stew and
homemade desserts like blueberry and peach cobbler."
"We
recommend getting Allen's meat on a plate (rather than a sandwich),
which includes a pile of sparkling coleslaw and about a half-dozen
crisp-skinned hush puppies. The hush pups are arranged like a sculptor's
work, on top of the pork. It is a field of spheres atop a heap of meat:
a lovely, aromatic, and absolutely mouth-watering sight."
- Michael Stern,
Roadfood.com, March 24, 2007 Kids' menu. No alcohol available. Serving lunch Tue-Sat, dinner Thu-Sat. Closed Sun-Mon.
