DETAILS

Ask any Raleigh native to list the best restaurants in town, and you'll hear the name Caffé Luna more often than not. It boasts the sophistication of a swanky Italian eatery but with a comfortable atmosphere and a price range that invites pasta lovers of all budgets - thus, it is suitable for casual get-togethers and formal rehearsal dinners alike. Such was founder Parker Kennedy's dream when he returned to his hometown in 1996 after spending 20 years in New York City as a wine salesman. The hardwood floors, arched doorways and vaulted ceilings of the Montague building set a chic scene. But the bustling ambiance and bright pastoral paintings by Kennedy's wife, Nicole, give Caffé Luna a homey accessibility that is unique for an establishment of its caliber. Here, you'll experience some impressively quick service considering the volume of customers seeking what may be the best calamari in town. Fresh mozzarella salads and the classic capellini primavera are also local favorites. Don't be surprised if you find yourself toting home a doggy bag: Portions are as plentiful as they are delicious.

Full bar. Serving lunch Mon-Fri, dinner Wed-Sat. Closed Sun. "Grilled main dishes, especially rib-eye steak and salmon, are always reliable, and a delicately crisp rendition of the classic veal Parmigiana is a standout."
- Gayot
