DETAILS
Clyde Cooper's Barbecue, founded in 1938, is as much a historic landmark as a casual joint for quality 'cue. One step through the door verifies the appeal and popularity of this downtown Raleigh darling. Sit among old-timey photographs, the buzzing service counter and the sweet aroma of down-home cooking while enjoying your complimentary basket of crunchy pork skins. Barbecue comes chopped, sliced or spare-ribbed, and chicken barbecued, fried or chopped. Not up for such a power-punch of meat? The Brunswick stew, though still a hearty, meat-based meal, is a favorite alternative to the barbecue. Vegetable plates are also available. Sweet tea and super-sugary lemonade are a given. Cash only. No alcohol available. Serving lunch and late lunch 10 am-6 pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sun. "The place in Raleigh for barbecue. Even if you think you prefer the Texas stuff, Cooper's will convert you. Prices are reasonable, and portions are generous."
