DETAILS

The bigger the better? When it comes to dessert, it seems so at Hayes Barton Cafe & Dessertery, located in the heart of Raleigh's Five Points. Black and white flooring offset by flashy red walls provides a modern twist on the 1940s theme (suspended WWII memorabilia, vintage Hollywood photographs and jazzy tunes in the background). Grab a barstool or a table if you can - the quaintness of this mom-and-pop soda shop adds to its charm but inevitably attracts hoards of customers on Friday and Saturday nights. They just keep be-boppin' back. And it has more than a little something to do with the unbelievable desserts. From milkshakes and malts to the mile-high coconut cake and chocolate peanut butter mousse pie, a single spoon should not venture alone. It's  known for its out-of-this-world portions and consistent ability to satisfy the strongest sweet tooth. Lunch and dinner items, from substantial burgers to chicken and mashed potatoes, are also reliable.

Full bar. Serving lunch Tue-Sat, dinner Wed-Sat. Closed Sun-Mon. "Raleigh's award-winning Hayes Barton Café is iconic for its 1940s memorabilia, red- and chrome-imbued dining area and, of course, the mouthwatering desserts. All the standards are found here-red velvet cake, lemon meringue pie, carrot cake - as well as nontraditional options like white chocolate pattycake and other intriguing varietal selections."
