When Grove Place's Abyssinia Restaurant opened in late 2000, diners were intrigued by the mesob, a small, brightly colored straw table that Ethiopian diners typically gather around at mealtimes. Although originally intended just for decoration, the mesob inspired so many dining requests that it’s now frequently occupied. But if it is taken on your visit, fear not. Even seated at a regular table, diners at Abyssnia enjoy an authentic Ethiopian meal, relaxed and communal, as they forgo utensils and dip injera, a spongy bread, into aromatic stews. For the full experience, order one of the reasonably priced combination platters to share, which feature both meat and vegetarian options. Specialties include yebeg t'ibs (lamb stew with vegetables) and kifto, a traditional ground beef dish available raw or cooked.
